Paddling is a brilliant way to get outdoors, and the spots on this site were chosen because they're calm, gentle places to give it a go. But all water carries risk, even on the calmest day. Conditions can change quickly, water is often colder than it looks, and rivers, lakes and the coast each have their own hazards.
Peaceful Paddle Spots shares places that I and fellow paddlers have paddled ourselves, to help you find somewhere to start. It isn't a safety guide, and nothing here can tell you whether a spot is safe for you on a particular day. You use these spots at your own risk, and you're responsible for your own safety and the safety of anyone paddling with you.
Before every trip, check the conditions, know your limits, use the right equipment, and let someone know your plans. If you're new to paddling, a taster session or course with a qualified provider is the best way to start.
Check the weather before every paddle, especially the wind, which can make even sheltered water rough and push you off course. For coastal spots, check the sea state too. You’re looking for flat, calm water.
The organisations below know water safety inside out. Please read their advice before you head out.
